DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will undertake a week-long official visit to the People’s Republic of China coinciding with Malaysia’s participation in the 22nd China–ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), held in Nanning, Guangxi.
The Expo, a premier platform for economic cooperation between China and ASEAN member states takes place from 16 to 23 September.
Fadillah, who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), said: “This engagement will strengthen Malaysia’s role as ASEAN’s dialogue coordinator with China from 2024 to 2027, while opening new pathways for strategic partnerships in infrastructure, smart city development and green technology.”
Fadillah is expected to hold a high-level meeting with His Excellency Liu Guozhong, Vice Premier of China, who oversees the Ministry of Water Resources.
The talks will centre on sustainable water governance, capacity-building initiatives and technology sharing to address long-term regional water challenges.
Beyond the engagements in Nanning, the Deputy Prime Minister will also visit Beijing and Chongqing. Discussions in these cities will highlight Malaysia’s interest in renewable energy solutions, energy storage innovations, next-generation nuclear technologies, and advanced water management systems.
Among the key areas of interest are China’s expertise in Sponge City design for urban flood resilience, underground water treatment infrastructure, water reuse for industrial applications, and the development of energy from biogas – all of which align with Malaysia’s long-term policy frameworks: the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Water Transformation Plan 2040 (AIR2040).
“With China being Malaysia’s largest trading partner, the visit is expected to attract high-value investment in green sectors and enhance Malaysia’s competitive edge in clean energy and sustainable technology,” the ministry added in a release on Tuesday.
The official visit underscores the country’s Malaysia MADANI aspirations and reaffirms Malaysia’s proactive role in the ASEAN–China partnership, aiming to position the nation as a resilient, inclusive and forward-looking regional player. - September 16, 2025
