TWO new pumps at the Remedios Pumping Station in Malate, Manila, are now operational and expected to help ease flooding along Roxas Boulevard to Taft Avenue, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said on Friday.
Dizon said the pumps would speed up floodwater removal in the area, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure that all pumping stations in Metro Manila are functioning properly during the rainy season.
“You can see that when the pumps are working, we can really minimize flooding here in Roxas all the way to Taft Avenue,” the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) chief said.
He reiterated that the president ordered agencies to ensure that all pumping stations across Metro Manila are in good working condition to prevent floodwater accumulation, particularly on major roads and in low-lying areas.
The directive came as the government continued its efforts to address flooding in the capital, the top DPWH official said, adding that more pumps at Remedios would help improve drainage in Malate, one of the areas affected by flooding during heavy rain.
No details were immediately provided on the pumps’ capacity or the extent of the expected reduction in flood depth and duration.
