THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said it is using provisions of Sen. Bong Go’s proposed Philippine Building Act in its review of the nearly 50-year-old National Building Code.
“Within two weeks, we will finalize our proposed amendments — which also incorporate and take into account the provisions from your own proposed bill, Sen. Bong Go,” Public Works Undersecretary Nick Conti said during the Senate deliberations on the agency’s proposed 2027 budget on Sept. 25.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the DPWH had formed a technical working group to review the National Building Code. Conti said this has been formalized through Special Order 155 that creates a review committee that meets twice a month.
The committee aims to complete the proposed amendments by the first week of October and an updated framework by February 2027.
Go urged the DPWH to modernize the country’s building standards and strengthen structures against natural disasters.
“It is time for us to look into updating the National Building Code. The DPWH will play a major role in ensuring the safety of our infrastructure,” Go said.
Go filed Senate Bill 666, or the proposed Philippine Building Act of 2025, which seeks to establish updated standards for the planning, design, construction, occupancy and maintenance of buildings and strengthen their resilience against earthquakes, fires, floods, storms and other hazards. The measure remains pending before a Senate committee.
