In a heated exchange over halal certification in Malaysia, UMNO Youth Chief Dr. Akmal Saleh has taken aim at Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, responding sharply to her criticisms of the halal certification process. The debate centers on Kok's recent remarks about the requirements for halal certification for food and beverage (F&B) outlets.

Dr. Akmal, in a TikTok video posted under his handle @Drakmalsaleh, has called out Kok for what he describes as a misunderstanding of the halal certification process. He argues that Kok’s critique oversimplifies the complexity of the certification, which extends beyond the mere absence of pork and alcohol in a restaurant's offerings.

The halal certificate involves more than just not serving pork or alcohol. It includes strict guidelines on food preparation and the sourcing of ingredients,” Dr. Akmal stated. He emphasized that these rules are in place to ensure compliance with halal standards, which encompass various aspects of food handling and processing.

In his video, Dr. Akmal also pointed out that the process for obtaining a halal certificate has become more streamlined. Citing recent improvements, he noted that what used to take vendors several months to secure can now be achieved in as little as 23 days. This change reflects a concerted effort to make the certification process more efficient and less burdensome for businesses.

Dr. Akmal expressed frustration with Kok’s comments, accusing her of causing unnecessary controversy and embarrassment for the country. “Your remarks disrupt the harmony of our nation and project a negative image internationally,” he said. He further criticized Kok’s understanding of the halal certification process, suggesting that if she is not well-versed in the matter, it would be better for her to remain silent.

Adding a provocative twist to his critique, Dr. Akmal concluded his video with a controversial suggestion: “Print a non-halal logo and stick it on the old Nyonya’s forehead.” This comment was intended as a jibe at Kok, whom he derisively referred to as “old Nyonya,” and underscores his frustration with her stance.

Earlier, Teresa Kok had voiced concerns that mandating halal certification for eateries that do not serve pork or alcohol could place undue burdens on vendors and potentially harm Malaysia’s international reputation. She later attempted to clarify her remarks, suggesting that they had been taken out of context.
