Dr Akmal, Hilman to face public mischief charges, confirms Attorney-General’s Chambers

THE Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has confirmed that four individuals, including UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and Bersatu Youth chief Muhammad Hilman Idham, will be charged for statements made on social media which authorities allege were disruptive to public order.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the AGC said it had reviewed the investigation papers submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police and found sufficient grounds to proceed with charges.

It said the decision was based on public statements made by Dr Akmal on his Facebook page “Akmal Saleh” and by Hilman on the TikTok account “alfah.channel.tv”.

“Based on the evidence and statements obtained, the department has decided to file charges under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code against them,” the AGC said.

The same charge will also be brought against Siti Hajar Aflah binti Sharuddin over content posted on her TikTok account “SHA Abrienda”.

Separately, Chandrasegaran a/l Subramaniam will be charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for alleged improper use of network services via the TikTok account “clkguchandra3”.

“The statements made by all the individuals involved were found to have threatened public order or constituted the improper use of network facilities or network services,” the AGC added.

Dr Akmal, in a Facebook post, confirmed that he will be charged this Friday, saying he had been contacted by police regarding the matter. Hilman, the Gombak Setia assemblyman, is expected to appear in the Magistrates’ Court in Jalan Duta today in relation to remarks he made during a gathering outside the Dang Wangi police district headquarters last month.

Bersatu Youth information chief Harris Idaham Rashid stated that Hilman would also be charged under Section 505(b) for allegedly issuing statements that incited public mischief.

All charges are expected to be filed at Magistrates’ Courts with appropriate local jurisdiction in the near future. - August 20, 2025
