In a move reminiscent of a lone wolf howling against the moon, UMNO Youth Chief Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh has emerged as a thorn in the side of both his party and the broader political establishment.
His recent criticism of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul’s decision to allow six Bersatu MPs to retain their seats, despite their party memberships being revoked, has stirred a political storm.
Dr. Akmal’s stance is clear and unwavering. He argues that this decision undermines the Anti-Party Hopping Act, rendering the effort to curb political defection meaningless.
By highlighting the inconsistency in the application of the law, he has positioned himself as a champion of political integrity, resonating deeply with the grassroots of UMNO, even as he ruffles feathers within the party’s higher echelons.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Akmal lambasted the decision, stating, “Before respecting the speaker’s decision, what is more important as a leader is to respect the rights of the people to reject political frogs from continuing to destroy the country!”
His words echo the frustration of many Malaysians who see political defections as a betrayal of the democratic process, benefitting only the defectors while leaving the nation in turmoil.
The six MPs in question—Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Zulkafperi Hanafi (Tanjong Karang), and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan)—have now aligned themselves with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
This realignment has been seen by Dr. Akmal and others as a betrayal of their electorate and a stark example of political opportunism.
Dr. Akmal’s critique extends beyond the immediate decision. He warns that allowing such precedents will only embolden others to switch allegiances for personal gain, further destabilizing the political landscape.
“In the end, the political frog is the one who benefits, the country gets destroyed and the people continue to bear the adverse consequences,” he cautioned.
His defiance has not gone unnoticed. Many on social media have hailed him as a principled leader unafraid to speak truth to power.
However, his outspoken nature has also attracted criticism, particularly from Pakatan Harapan (PH) Youth, who accused him of being disrespectful to the Speaker. Yet, Dr. Akmal remains undeterred, defending his position with the retort, “How to say they’re right when they’re wrong?”
This confrontation underscores a broader issue within Malaysian politics—the persistent struggle between principle and pragmatism.
Dr. Akmal’s actions highlight a growing discontent with the status quo, where political maneuvering often takes precedence over genuine representation. His critique of political stability serving self-interest rather than the common good is a stark reminder of the disconnect between politicians and the electorate.
The recent walk-out by the opposition in the Dewan Rakyat further illustrates the deep divisions and dissatisfaction with the current political climate.
Dr. Akmal’s willingness to “whack his own team” rather than turn a blind eye to their faults is a rare display of integrity in a field often marked by compromise and concession.
In conclusion, Dr. Akmal Saleh’s outspoken stance against the retention of seats by the six Bersatu MPs serves as a beacon for those advocating for genuine political reform. His actions remind us that true leadership often involves taking unpopular stands and holding firm to one’s principles, even in the face of formidable opposition.
Whether seen as a thorn in the flesh or a wolf in sheep’s clothing, Dr. Akmal’s unwavering commitment to his beliefs continues to resonate with many Malaysians yearning for a more accountable and transparent political system.
