“Dr. Mahathir Mohamad accepted his new position as an adviser to a coalition of states led by Perikatan Nasional in order to discredit Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim,” said former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak
According to Free Malaysia Today, Salleh said that Mahathir would only gain from his position as the unofficial advisor to the opposition-led states if he could gain a seat in the Dewan Rakyat and take the lead in the opposition.
“Mahathir is a highly intelligent politician. The former Langkawi MP is smarter than most of us. In order to challenge the prime minister's authority and influence, he seeks to exert more effective influence over the political sphere,” said Salleh.
"I’m well aware that Dr. Mahathir is a master at this kind of game and I respect him for that. Age and ambition have no boundaries in politics and we should never underestimate an old man's willpower. When dealing with an opponent, it's important to keep an eye on both his acts and his objectives. If one does not take the initiative, one will pay the price,” warned Salleh.
The Usukan assemblyman claimed that if all of Mahathir’s enemies regard this as impossible and remain off guard, 98-year-old Mahathir may even succeed in becoming prime minister once again.
Salleh also stated that unless PAS thought Mahathir could aid PN in regaining federal authority, PAS would not have supported Mahathir.
The "state government four" (SG4), led by the PN, would form a new coalition, according to Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who announced that Mahathir will serve as the SG4's unofficial adviser.
A high-ranking PAS delegation of the four PN states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis, met with Mahathir on September 2.
This resulted in the appointment of Tun Dr. Mahathir as Perikatan Nasional’s unofficial adviser.
