Tun Dr Mahathir said Najib is responsible for Malaysia lagging behind its neighbours. Najib is also the one to blame for our current predicament.
After all, we cannot blame Tun M because we were making great progress during the time when he was Prime Minister, for 22 years.
Tun M said, “Yes the country is lagging behind its neighbours. Correct. But it is due to Najib’s corrupted government. It is due to the huge amounts of money he borrowed which have now disappeared.
“It is due to the projects he started, which were not only overpriced but favoured the other parties. It is due to the projects being of little benefit to the country. And, of course, due to having to pay to settle the huge debts incurred by him (Najib). There is no money left to develop the country,“ Dr Mahathir wrote on his Facebook and was quoted by news media on 20 July. (FMT)
According to FMT Tun M also allegedly accused Najib of engineering the change of government twice. “Who is he asking to focus on the economy? It cannot be PH (Pakatan Harapan) as he has engineered the back door change of government; not once but twice,“ he added.
A week earlier, Najib had said our country was lagging behind neighbours and blamed it on the Pakatan Harapan government’s decision to call off many projects that he initiated.
In response, Tun M wrote, “It is amazing. Najib is at it again. He is blatantly blaming others for the situation that he himself created”.
We are losing out to our neighbours on many counts, foreign direct investment (FDI) is one area in particular. Foreign investors may be avoiding Malaysia because of our serious corruption problems. Thanks to Najib Malaysia is now recognised as the most corrupt in the world.
So, unless and until we are able to dispose of Najib’s corruption cases quickly the level of confidence in the country may not be easily restored to what it was before he came to power. The whole nation is holding its breath awaiting the outcome of Najib’s final appeal at the Federal Court.
Newsweek in its latest issue raises the question that is on everyone’s mind, “Will Najib do time”. The newsweekly was asking the question about Trump while in Malaysia we are doing the same in reference to Najib.
Lucky for us the Deputy President of UMNO had verbalised what is on our minds when he said Najib must go to prison if found guilty by the Federal Court and appeal, for pardon from behind bars. It is our humble opinion that every crime must be punished according to the law of the country and Najib is no exception.
So, the question is not “will he” but “when will” he go to jail for his offences against the country.
However, the final decision still rests on the shoulders of our learned judges. Until then investors may not have enough confidence in Malaysia as they once did and consequently we are likely to be lagging behind Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand or even Vietnam in FDI and other areas of development.
