KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday for observation, with his family saying there was no cause for concern over his condition.

According to Bernama, his son Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir said the 101-year-old statesman was admitted so doctors could monitor him following the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, on Monday.

“He was admitted to IJN for observation. The past two days have been quite stressful for Tun M, but for now, he is okay and there is no cause for concern,” Mokhzani was quoted as saying.

Separately, Berita Harian reported that Dr Mahathir’s press secretary Sufi Yusoff said the former prime minister was exhausted and had not had enough sleep following his wife’s death.

“He was exhausted from all the emotional ups and downs, the hot weather and not getting enough rest. All that is not a good combination for someone who is 101 years old,” Sufi was quoted as saying.

Dr Siti Hasmah died at IJN on Monday at the age of 100 after her condition deteriorated following a heart attack, and was laid to rest at Pusara Negara in Precinct 20, Putrajaya, later that day.

Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah, both doctors by training, were married for 70 years and had seven children.
