Former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has thrown down the gauntlet to current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, challenging him to call for an election to assess his support among Malaysians. Mahathir accuses Anwar of abusing his power by employing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate political adversaries and influencing the judiciary to favor his allies—a tactic Mahathir claims he never resorted to during his over two decades in power.

During a press conference, Mahathir asserted that he had never utilized such measures throughout his extensive political career. He emphasized winning every election with a two-thirds majority over five consecutive terms. Mahathir expressed confidence in the democratic process, stating that if he had been abusing his position, the electorate would not have consistently supported him.

"I challenge Anwar to call for an election today… to see what the people think," Mahathir declared.

Anwar Ibrahim assumed office as Malaysia's 10th prime minister on November 24, 2022, following the 15th general election, which resulted in a hung Parliament. Securing majority support, Anwar formed a coalition government backed by MPs from various political groups, including Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, Warisan, and others.

Taking a swipe at Anwar, Mahathir highlighted the conventional path to becoming a prime minister—winning elections and forming governments. However, he emphasized that Anwar had lost the recent election, questioning the legitimacy of his leadership.

In the 15th general election, Pakatan Harapan won 82 seats, Perikatan Nasional secured 73, Barisan Nasional obtained 30, Gabungan Parti Sarawak earned 23, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah got six, and Warisan claimed three seats. Two independents were also elected.

Mahathir himself contested the Langkawi seat in the same election but was among the 369 candidates who lost their deposits after failing to secure more than one-eighth of the votes. Despite his electoral setback, Mahathir remains an influential figure in Malaysian politics and continues to voice his opinions on the nation's leadership and governance.

As the political landscape evolves, the challenge thrown by Mahathir introduces a new dimension to the ongoing power dynamics, prompting discussions about leadership legitimacy and electoral mandates in Malaysia. The call for an election, if heeded by Anwar, could become a pivotal moment in determining public sentiment and the political trajectory of the nation.
