Dr Mahathir resigns as Pejuang chairman

KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned as Pejuang chairperson last Wednesday, according to reports.

Malaysiakini quoted Pejuang’s former candidate for Tg Karang parliamentary seat Azlan Sani Zawawi as confirming the matter.

“(It is) true. He told us on Wednesday,” he was quoted as saying.

However, when pressed further on the 97-year-old’s justification for resigning from position in the party he founded, Azlan said he is not in the know.

“We did not ask that. We respect his decision,” he was quoted as saying by the news portal.

Similarly, BuletinTV3 also reported on the resignation. It reported a source as saying that he will remain as the chairman of the Gerakan Tanah Air coalition.

To date, there has yet to be any announcement from Pejuang on the matter.

Dr Mahathir’s resignation came after GTA’s abysmal performance in the recently concluded 15th general election.

Contesting under the Pejuang banner, GTA candidates had lost all 125 seats that they contested, with many losing their deposits.

They include Dr Mahathir, who contested in Langkawi, as well as his son and party president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who lost in Jerlun. – The Vibes, December 16, 2022
