The selection of the Deputy Prime Minister, who is still being prosecuted in court, was questioned by the former prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

The former Langkawi Member of Parliament recently stated his opinion on the need for reform in the role on his Twitter account.

He clarified that this is due to the contradictions between the clauses in Article 33A of the Federal Constitution.

"I immediately discovered the discrepancy of provisions under Article 33A while studying the Federal Constitution." It states that if the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is charged with a crime, he must stop performing his duties as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"It amply demonstrates that allegations of any violation are so serious that someone like the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is required to relinquish his or her position as Head of State."

However, it does not specify that he must be proven guilty in order for him to stop working. According to the charges, "it clearly states that it is serious enough for the constitution to specify the suspension of its powers," he added.

Dr. Mahathir thus questioned what happens to leaders who are in a lower position than the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, such as the Deputy Prime Minister (TPM).

Dr. Mahathir asked if anyone had been appointed to the job despite facing up to 40 counts of criminal prosecution without mentioning any specific people. The query was, "Should TPM be treated better than YDPA?"

Ending the entry, Dr Mahathir jokingly wrote to ignore his writing because he wanted to go back to looking after his grandson.

Even though Dr Mahathir did not state any name, many believe that the statement is a snub towards Zahid Hamidi, who was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister despite currently facing multiple charges.

According to FMT, for receiving bribes for several projects while serving as the home minister and for money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving millions from Yayasan Akal Budi, Zahid is still facing 35 accusations in the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
