Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the former prime minister, has been selected by the federal opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) to serve as the unofficial adviser to the four states it controls.

According to news outlet Malay Mail, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar claimed his counterparts in Kedah, Kelantan, and Perlis were in accord and will be talking about an action plan for the group known as "State Government 4" or "SG4" for short.

“In particular, Mahathir will advise us on good governance to make sure the new grouping will be run effectively,” said Ahmad Samsuri.

Ahmad Samsuri also stated, “Dr. Mahathir's role will also be to connect the four states with investors from nations like Japan and South Korea that have good ties with him.”

The four PN state MBs have in principle agreed to form a group for strategic cooperation to focus on economic growth and enhancing public welfare, according to Ahmad Samsuri, who is also the vice-president of PAS.

According to a former federal minister, Perikatan Nasional is attempting to portray Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as the coalition's de facto head by appointing him as an informal adviser to a group of opposition-led states.

According to Salleh Said Keruak in Free Malaysia Today, Muhyiddin Yassin, the head of the PN, was not invited to a meeting between Mahathir and some PAS leaders earlier this month.

"It is a brilliant move to put Mahathir back at the political forefront," said Salleh.

Salleh however thinks Muhyiddin has "limited options" and will have to accept "whatever decision" PAS makes on Mahathir's future participation in the alliance.

After the Parti Pribumi Malaysia Bersatu (Bersatu), which Mahathir co-founded, rebelled against him and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government he led by joining up with some PAS and Umno MP, Dr. Mahathir resigned as prime minister in February 2020.
