Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah claimed that Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is among those who wish to see Umno BN fall, particularly during Najib Razak's leadership in GE14.
Said the Umno veteran, Dr. Mahathir did not stop trying to smear Najib Razak's reputation and harm the party's image that supported Barisan Nasional (BN) when he was chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH).
"In the 14th General Election (GE14), Dr Mahathir led PH to defeat Najib and BN.
“He really wants to topple BN, especially Najib, who has been accused of various things,” Tengku Razaleigh said to Ku Li, told The Malaysian Insight.
Commenting on the recent defeat of UMNO in PRN, he explained that the defeat of Umno and BN in the recent six-state PRN is a shared responsibility among the leaders of the party, not just Zahid Hamidi.
"This is not the work of a single person, because there must be agreement among those designated as leaders. As a result, it must be a shared responsibility," Tengku Razaleigh, also known as Ku Li, told The Malaysian Insight.
Umno won only 19 of the 108 seats it sought in the six states of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.
Idris Jusoh, an Umno veteran, publicly demanded Zahid's resignation, blaming him solely for the party's defeat in Terengganu.
Since the coalition's disastrous performance in the 15th General Election, when it won only 30 of the 191 seats it contested, there have been calls for Zahid to step down.
According to The Malaysian Insight, political analysts Dr. Awang Azman Awang Pawi and Dr. Mazlan Ali weighed in on Zahid's refusal to resign as President following the PRN's crushing defeat in six states last August 12.
However, according to political commentators, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's resignation as Umno President will not solve the Umno-Barisan Nasional issues.
Their professional advice is for Zahid to take advantage of the government platform to regain support from Malaysians.
