Kuala Lumpur – The upcoming by-election in Kuala Kubu Baharu is poised to deliver a gripping political showdown, as former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad foresees the Democratic Action Party (DAP) clinching victory amid a divided Malay vote.
Mahathir pointed out that a range of Malay-based parties have cropped up, causing a rift among Malay voters and leaving the field open for DAP to seize the opportunity. "Despite the larger Malay voter base in the constituency, the fragmentation of the Malay vote gives DAP an edge," Mahathir stated at Putra's Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house.
The veteran politician reminisced about a time when Malay voters rallied under UMNO, consistently securing a two-thirds parliamentary majority. However, in recent years, the emergence of more Malay-based parties, including Putra, has shifted the balance.
The Kuala Kubu Baharu seat in Selangor will be contested on May 11. The mixed electorate comprises 46% Malay voters, 30% Chinese, 18% Indian, and 5% others. The race features four contenders: DAP's Pang Sock Tao, Perikatan Nasional's (PN) Khairul Azhari Saut, Parti Rakyat Malaysia's (PRM) Hafizah Zainudin, and independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin.
The by-election follows the vacancy left by three-term DAP assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong, who passed away on March 21 due to cancer.
With the race heating up, all eyes are on Kuala Kubu Baharu, where the clash between united Chinese voters and a splintered Malay electorate will likely determine the outcome.
The four-cornered fight in Kuala Kubu Baharu is one of the most highly anticipated by-elections in recent times. With each candidate bringing their own strengths and supporters, the competition promises to be fierce and unpredictable.
Pang Sock Tao, representing DAP, is a seasoned politician who understands the needs and concerns of the local community. His party's strong presence in the constituency and reputation for advocating for various ethnic groups could work in his favor.
On the other hand, PN's Khairul Azhari Saut aims to capitalize on the Malay vote, hoping to unite the voters under the Perikatan Nasional banner. As the acting chief of Hulu Selangor Bersatu, Khairul is expected to draw upon his party's base and secure a significant portion of the Malay vote.
PRM's Hafizah Zainudin brings a fresh perspective to the race, targeting voters who seek alternatives to the mainstream parties. Her candidacy could appeal to those looking for change and new leadership.
Lastly, independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin enters the race as a wildcard. Independent candidates often have the freedom to campaign on a platform that resonates with local issues, potentially pulling support away from the major parties.
The outcome of this by-election will have far-reaching implications, as it may serve as a bellwether for future state and national elections. A DAP win could solidify the party's standing in Selangor and reinforce its status as a dominant force in Malaysian politics. Conversely, a victory by PN, PRM, or the independent candidate could signal a shift in the political landscape, hinting at a resurgence of Malay-based parties or a growing appetite for independent voices.
As polling day approaches, candidates will be working hard to sway voters and secure their support. In this high-stakes contest, every vote counts, and the final result could shape the political trajectory of Kuala Kubu Baharu and beyond.
Stay tuned for more updates as this thrilling race unfolds. The outcome will not only impact the local community but could also have national repercussions, making it a must-watch event for political enthusiasts across Malaysia.
