Drink driving: Duo jailed and fined

TAWAU: Two men who were driving under the influence of alcohol were jailed two days and fined RM11,500 and RM11,000, or three months’ imprisonment if they fail to pay the fines.

Edi Manja, 29, and Nadzmer Najer, 33, were also fined RM500 and RM300 or three days’ jail respectively, for driving without a licence and for no insurance coverage on the car.

Edi and Nadzmer pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin.

They committed the offence along Jalan Chong Thien Vun, here at 11.50pm on Nov 16, this year and 12.45am on Nov 17.

Edi, who was driving a Perodua Myvi, was found to be driving under the influence with 108 milligrams (ml) of ethanol per 100 ml of blood, exceeding the legal limit of 50 ml per 100 ml of blood, following a breathalyzer test using the EBA II device.

Meanwhile, Nadzmer, who was driving a Perodua Alza, committed a similar offence, registering 84ml of ethanol per 100 ml of blood, also above the permissible limit.

According to the case facts, both accused were apprehended during an internal integrated operation (Ops Mabuk) at a roadblock along Jalan Chong Thien Vun on the said day.

Traffic Prosecutor ASP Joan Lee led the prosecution.
