A bus driver fled and left 11 passengers stranded during a police inspection at the Gopeng Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) Rest Stop on Thursday (November 28).

According to a report by Sinar Harian, the bus was heading to the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal in Penang from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Kuala Lumpur, when it stopped at RTC for inspections at 10:30pm.

The driver stopped the bus by the side of the road and abandoned it before he could be checked by enforcement officers, allegedly out of fear that he would fail a urine screening test. This caused congestion at the entrance of the rest stop.

Further inspections by the police found a syabu burning device, known as a ‘bong’, inside a bag that was left on the driver’s seat of the bus.

The Perak State Security Director, Mohd Zawawi Zakaria said that the case of the bus driver, who is believed to be involved in drugs, will be handed over to the police for further action.

“The purpose of this operation is to pay attention and conduct continuous monitoring on all types of vehicles, especially commercial vehicles, to ensure that they always comply with the road rules and regulations that have been set,”

“In the operation, various offences were successfully detected, including driving without a license, vehicle registration number offences and others for which summons have been issued,” he explained.

It is uncertain as to how long the passengers were left stranded.
