A driver was tragically killed after being trapped and burned to death inside his electric car following a high-speed crash in China.
Disturbing nighttime footage showed the Xiaomi SU7 engulfed in flames on wet roads in Chengdu, Sichuan.
Rescuers were seen desperately trying to break into the locked vehicle, pulling at the doors, kicking, and peering through the windows, as the fire consumed the car.
As reported by The Sun, the sedan had crashed into a green divider at high speed, spun into the opposite lane, and burst into flames.
According to police, the 31-year-old driver, identified only by his surname Deng, was suspected to have been driving under the influence when he collided with another vehicle early Monday morning.
According to The Paper, an anonymous eyewitness stated that the fire broke out around 3:10 AM.
“My friend and I immediately drove to the scene. At first, there were four or five people trying to rescue the man,” the witness said.
“One of them didn’t have any tools and tried to pry open the car window with his hands, bleeding all over.”
Despite desperate efforts, rescuers were unable to reach Deng before the flames engulfed the car.
“Later, we waited for the fire truck to arrive and used a cutter to break the car window. Only then were we able to retrieve the man,” the witness added.
According to the witness, the Xiaomi’s body remained “relatively intact,” suggesting the doors were not jammed by impact but possibly by design.
The SU7 is equipped with electronic door locks, which may have malfunctioned when the car lost power, trapping the driver inside as the fire spread.
The Chengdu fire marks the second fatal SU7 accident this year.
