Being an extremely busy airport that sees thousands of travellers entering and leaving Malaysia, traffic congestion at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) isn’t unusual.

In order to curb the issue, the airport’s management introduced the Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS), which came into full effect on Dec 1 following a three-month trial.

Driver hit with RM100 penalty

Unfortunately, not all drivers seem to be aware of the new rule and found out about it the hard way, just like how one driver did.

In a TikTok video posted by @pitjoe88, it showed a blue Proton vehicle making its way to the boom gate before exiting KLIA.

When the driver tapped the parking card at the scanner, the screen displayed the outstanding payment amount and time the driver spent parking at the kerbside.

To the OP’s shock, the driver was charged RM100 for parking a total of 33 minutes at the kerbside.

For the uninitiated, the penalty fee is based on how long one parks at the kerbside, with the first 10 minutes being completely free.

Once the grace period has exceeded, the VAMS system automatically calculates the total duration of stay as shown in the table below:

‘What was the driver doing for 33 minutes?’

In the comment section, netizens were bemused by the amount of time the driver spent on parking and wondered what actually went on during that period.

‘What was he doing for 33 minutes at the departure hall? Even making out doesn’t take 33 minutes.’

Some praised the airport management for enforcing VAMS as they often had to contend with congestion at the arrival hall and found it difficult to pick passengers up.

One netizen jokingly commended the airport for being “smart” in implementing a system that would bring in lots of revenue.
