KENINGAU: Keningau saw a decrease in road accidents during the first seven months of this year, said Assistant Minister of Works, Datuk Robert Tawik

Statistics recorded by the Police from January to July this year showed the accident rate for the Keningau district decreased in cases involving death, serious injury, and minor injury.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility and the community should strive to increase knowledge about tips to create a society that is knowledgeable about road safety,” he said at a press conference after launching the the state level Road Safety Awareness Campaign in conjunction with the Christmas celebrations and School Holiday at Jalan Keningau-Tambunan here on Monday.

The annual programme is implemented by the Ministry of Works through the Road Safety Department in collaboration with the District Office is an effort to raise road safety awareness of the community, especially road users.

“It is my hope that all road users will cooperate fully for our common safety.

“Road users need to be aware for us to remind all members of the public to reduce the number of accidents on these roads,” Robert, who is also a Bingkor State Assemblyman said.

His hope is that the accident rate in the coming year can be reduced with the awareness of drivers who are disciplined and prudent on the road.

According to him, the reduction in accidents reflects a positive development.

“If this rate reduction remains until the end of this year and next year, it certainly reflects the level of awareness related to prudent driving among the community, especially road users in this district.

“This positive development also shows the effectiveness of the awareness programme implemented by JKJR throughout the year,” he said.

Robert also distributed pamphlets on road safety to motorists.
