GEORGE TOWN: Police arrested a 35-year-old local man who attempted to trespass into the Dato’ Keramat Police Station here and seize a firearm from a sentry personnel early this morning.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the suspect, who was under the influence of alcohol, arrived at the station around 4 am and demanded the on-duty policeman to open the gate while using abusive language.

“The policeman on duty warned and advised the suspect to leave the station area, but the suspect ignored the advice and warnings.

“Instead, the suspect approached the policeman and attempted to seize the HK MP5 weapon he was carrying but was successfully stopped,“ he said in a statement today.

Hamzah said the suspect then took a helmet and tried to attack the sentry policeman and a scuffle broke out but he was successfully detained.

He added that a background check revealed the suspect had four prior records, including two criminal cases and two drug-related cases, while his urine test for drugs returned negative.

The suspect has been remanded for four days to assist in the investigation under Section 353 and Section 506 of the Penal Code as well as Section 90 of the Police Act 1967.
