DTF St. Louis, the new HBO dark-comedy series, wrapped up with a finale that had us gasping throughout its 55-minute run. If there is one thing that the show has taught us, it is to always be wary of your “partner in crime”, because if yours is anything like Clark and Carol, you may find yourself in serious trouble too. So, who really killed Floyd? To know the answer to that, you must read this DTF St. Louis ending explained piece!

Created by Steven Conrad, DTF St. Louis follows the twisted love triangle between WTGK’s American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter Floyd Smernitch (played by David Harbour), his wife Carol Love-Smernitch (played by Linda Cardellini) and his best friend Clark Forrest (played by Jason Bateman), who happens to be Missouri’s favourite weatherman.

Their messy relationship begins with a simple conversation between Floyd and Clark, each of whom is in a sexually unfulfilling marriage with their respective wives, Carol and Eimy Forrest (played by Wynn Everett). Their chat leads them to DTF St. Louis, a dating app exclusively meant for married people to meet and form discreet relationships with new partners.

The two friends, who are eager to spice up their love lives, sign themselves up on this app. Of course, one thing leads to another, and soon enough, Clark finds himself in an affair with Carol, a relationship that Floyd not only knows of but also approves wholeheartedly.

Their entire set-up comes crashing down, however, when Floyd is found dead after ingesting a lethal dose of Amphezyne, making his best friend and his wife the prime suspects in his murder. So, did Clark kill Floyd so that he could be with Carol without any complications? Was it Carol who brought about her own husband’s death so that she could enjoy the seven-figure life insurance policy she had taken out on Floyd — or was it someone else altogether? Well, you are about to find out.

The finale of the HBO TV series DTF St. Louis begins with Clark in custody, being questioned by detectives Donoghue Homer (played by Richard Jenkins) and Jodie Plumb (played by Joy Sunday). During their conversation, Clark reveals that “Tiger Tiger” aka Kevin Van Der Lonse (played by Chris Perfetti) — the man Clark had tried to set Floyd up with — had rejected Floyd, refusing to meet him at the pool on the day of his murder. The rejection further plummeted Floyd’s self-esteem, making him feel ashamed of his body and throwing him into a spiral.

Detective Jodie subsequently re-interviews Carol. During their conversation, they talk about the bicycle that was seen near the pool on the day of Floyd’s murder — the one that was later found in Carol’s garage. Carol admits the bicycle belongs to her, but adds that she was at home caring for her troubled son, Richard (played by Arlan Ruf), the day her husband was found dead.

In another flashback, it is revealed that, in an effort to make Floyd feel better about himself, Clark goes for a stroll with him, during which they speak candidly about Floyd’s feelings. During the conversation, Clark asks Floyd to go to the pool the following morning as planned — even though Tiger Tiger would no longer be meeting him there — because another surprise would be waiting for him instead. Excited, Floyd agrees and goes to the venue as arranged.

What happens once Floyd arrives at the pool?

Floyd, who thinks Clark is setting him up with another person, fixes himself a drink mixed with some Amphezyne, a sexual stimulant drug, and arrives at the pool. As promised, there is indeed a surprise waiting for him at the venue — and it is none other than Clark himself.

They get into a deeply intimate conversation, where Clark tells his friend to fall back in love with himself and regain his self-confidence. As their conversation progresses, they begin discussing their insecurities, which leads them to undressing in front of each other.

The two seem to be having a great time, laughing and dancing together intimately, before Clark leaves for the night. But unbeknownst to them, Richard, Floyd’s stepson, has seen everything.

HBO’s DTF St. Louis ending explained: Does Richard kill Floyd?

(Trigger warning: Mention of suicide)

In a way — yes.

Turns out, while Carol had been sleeping in her house, Richard had woken up in the middle of the night to use Floyd’s laptop. Unfortunately, as soon as he switched on the laptop, Richard came across his stepfather’s profile on DTF St. Louis. Upon digging a little, Richard discovers an exchange between Floyd and Tiger Tiger, where they had discussed meeting at the town pool early in the morning.

Suspecting Floyd of cheating on his mother, Richard leaves for the pool without informing Carol, riding away on her bicycle. From a distance, he watches Clark undress before Floyd and jumps to the conclusion that his stepfather is having an affair with his friend.

An enraged Richard confronts Floyd after Clark leaves the pool. He calls his stepfather vile names and passes acerbic comments on his naked body.

Deeply hurt, Floyd decides to ingest the entire bottle of Amphezyne, taking his own life while Richard cycles back home quietly.

The HBO show DTF St. Louis ends with the two detectives discussing the complex case.
