- His wife, Alma Viator, announced on Sunday (9 August) that he passed away from a "massive heart attack".
- Jones starred as the bearded mechanic Cooter Davenport throughout all seven seasons of The Dukes of Hazzard, which aired from 1979 to 1985.
- After his acting career, Jones served as a US House of Representatives member for Georgia's fourth district from 1989, winning re-election once before losing his seat.
- Tributes were paid by his Dukes of Hazzard co-star Tom Wopat, who described Jones as a "fine friend and a fierce advocate".
