Thanks to the hot weather the last two months we are enjoying a bountiful durian harvest now.

Durian runtoh'! Says the Malay proverb. It means bumper harvest.

Up in the hills of Batu Ferringgi, Penang overlooking the Andaman Sea, lies an 8 acres of durian farm called Eng Hoe Durian Farm.

Quiet and peaceful this farm is nestled between the hills and is good for spiritual upliftment and the tasting of some of the best durians in Penang.

Sitting comfortably outside the villa’s porch, enjoying the breeze and serene sea view, sipping Chinese tea and tasting the best ‘Capri’ durian,

‘ Ah…. This is the life I’d been waiting for' said Ah Huat, my old buddy.

“You could be rich if you sell off your land? ” I quipped, while savouring a mouthful of pungent smelling, yet tasty ‘ Capri' durian.

' I can’t imagine doing that. It’s my labour of love – my passion! That’s my father’s wish before he died.” asserted Ah Huat.

“There are over 300 trees of various varieties of durians and 80% of them are matured old trees of more than 30 years. I cannot imagine selling the land to developers and turning them into concrete jungle!'

Durian season.

Come May till September – the durian season months, and the place comes alive with groups of durian-eating lovers from local and foreign tourists.

“You know? This is my utopia. I have always dream of retiring and being a farmer” said Ah Huat, who used to be a high level stressed-out executive in the corporate world.

Upon retiring, he returned home from China and started work on his father’s farm transforming the old farmhouse into a beautiful villa with well manicured garden

Durians are the favourite fruit of most Malaysians. There are so many varieties that I lost count of them. To miss this season, especially those from Penang, will be like missing out on the lottery.

Besides enjoying the King of the Fruits, it also offers a conducive place for spiritual uplifting, medical recuperation, writer’s retreat, rest and recreation and meditation.
