RANAU: The return of the durian season has once again transformed Ranau into a haven for fruit lovers, with roadside stalls and the district’s open market filled with the distinctive aroma of the much-loved tropical fruit.
A check at the Ranau Fruit and Vegetable Open Market found an increasing supply of durians from local growers, with several varieties available for consumers, ranging from affordable kampung varieties to premium selections such as Musang King and Udang Merah.
Among the varieties available were D24, D8, D100, D144, D168, D7, D5, D163 and D99, giving consumers a wide choice depending on their taste and budget.
Premium varieties, however, command considerably higher prices. Musang King was sold at around RM45 per kg, while Udang Merah at RM30 per kg.
Other varieties, including IOI and Mas Pahang, were available at around RM35 per kg, while Nabaluking was around RM25 per kg.
For those looking for a more affordable option, mixed varieties are also available in plastic takeaway packs, with prices ranging from RM10 to RM50, depending on the quantity, size and type of durian selected.
Some vendors were also offering durians at lower prices, with certain varieties selling from as little as RM5 to RM15 per kg.
The growing supply has prompted durian vendors to suggest that the Ranau District Council (MDR) and the relevant local authorities consider organising a district-level Durian Festival this year.
According to the vendors, August and September would be ideal for such event as the district is currently experiencing a steady supply of durians from local growers as well as other parts of Sabah.
They believe a festival could also complement the various celebrations held during the month, including the National Day and Malaysia Day festivities, while providing an additional attraction for visitors and the local community.
A vendor said a durian festival would provide an opportunity for local growers and traders to showcase the diversity of durian varieties available in the district while promoting Ranau as a destination for local fruit enthusiasts.
Apart from durian, the Ranau Open Market also offers a wide selection of seasonal local fruits, including sweet mangoes, mangosteen, tarap, langsat, golden melon and pineapple.
Durian stalls along the roadside, particularly around Kampung Nabutan, have become popular stops for motorists and visitors looking to buy freshly harvested fruit directly from vendors.
With supply continuing to increase, vendors said prices remain relatively affordable, particularly for customers buying in larger quantities, with some sellers willing to negotiate for wholesale purchases.
