Financial issues can often be the “make or break” factor for couples, where it can lead to furious arguments and messy breakups in its wake.

A Dutch man resorted to committing a daring theft after he verbally fought with his Thai wife over financial problems they were facing.

Frequently argued over money

According to a report by Thai news media outlet Khaosod English, the 60-year-old man, simply known as Mr S., had moved to Thailand six years ago to run a restaurant he personally invested around 10 million baht (approx. RM1.3mil) along with his wife Waraporn.

However, things quickly went south for the couple’s venture and this inevitably led to increasing financial pressure and verbal fights between them.

Dutch man steals entire ATM from bank

On Saturday night (Sept 20), Mr S. got into another fight with Waraporn over money issues and proceeded to storm out of the house, where he told her he was going to see some friends.

However, what she didn’t know what that Mr S. had actually made his way to a Siam Commercial Bank outside a local store and loaded an entire ATM machine onto the back of his Mazda pickup truck before fleeing the scene.

He was later arrested by police from Ban Ped Station after they found drag marks stretching 20 meters from where the ATM had been bolted down.

Waraporn was only made aware of her husband’s crime after police contacted her the next morning and broke the news to her.

Fingerprints were later collected from both the ATM and pickup truck by forensic teams, and formal charges have since been filed by bank representatives.

Mr S. now faces a litany of criminal charges, including nighttime theft, property damage, and using a vehicle to commit a crime.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine between THB2,000 (RM264.32) and THB14,000 (RM1,850.26).
