The Veterinary Services Department (DVS) has confirmed that it has taken custody of a husky dog that was allegedly abused, as shown in a viral video. The department responded to the video's location, a condominium in Kajang, but discovered that the dog had already been taken to a veterinary clinic in Kota Damansara.
Following this lead, DVS officials took custody of the husky for further investigation and examination by a veterinary officer. In their statement, the DVS noted that an investigation under the Animal Welfare Act 2015 has been initiated. This act stipulates severe penalties for those convicted of animal abuse, including fines ranging from RM20,000 to RM100,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
The DVS has already taken a statement from a suspect involved in the case. The investigation papers will be forwarded to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office for further direction. The department also clarified that it had not issued any previous statements regarding the matter, contrary to online claims, and warned that it may take legal action against such false reports.
The viral video in question was reported by Malay Mail yesterday (July 3). The footage appeared to show a man striking his pet husky, which led to the dog being rescued by independent rescuers. In response to the incident, the owner of the husky filed a police report, alleging that his dog had been "kidnapped." He insisted that he was merely disciplining his pet and demanded its return.
This case has brought significant attention to the issue of animal abuse and the legal consequences that come with it. The DVS's swift action highlights the importance of upholding animal welfare laws and ensuring that those who violate these laws are held accountable. The department's involvement in this high-profile case underscores its commitment to protecting animals from abuse and neglect.
Furthermore, this incident serves as a reminder of the power of social media in bringing such issues to light. The viral video prompted immediate action from authorities, demonstrating the role of public awareness and vigilance in combating animal cruelty. As the investigation continues, it is hoped that justice will be served, and the husky will receive the care and protection it deserves. The DVS's ongoing efforts to address this case will be closely watched by the public, who are increasingly concerned about the treatment of animals in society.
