Kota Kinabalu: The State Government through the Sabah Irrigation and Drainage Department is developing a Flood Forecasting and Warning Programme (PRAB) that will enable monsoon floods to be forecast at least seven days in advance.

Assistant Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Hendrus Anding said it would involve a system that will enable flood warnings to be issued to the public one to three hours earlier, based on the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s weather forecasts.

The project is under the department's nationwide PRAB programme involving 74 river basins. It is divided into two main phases and expected to complete in 2030.

“Under PRAB Phase Two, the river basins involved for Sabah are its three main river basins, namely Sungai Padas, Sungai Kinabatangan and Sungai Abai,” Hendrus told a State Legislative Assembly sitting, here, Monday.
