Earthquake in Mindanao triggers evacuation in Sabah, Sarawak

A POWERFUL magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Mindanao, Southern Philippines caused hundreds of office workers in Sabah and Sarawak to evacuate their buildings this morning. 

Videos of the evacuation went viral around 11am. The earthquake occurred in the deep offshore region of Mindanao at a depth of 630km around 10.13am. 

Workers at the Yayasan Sabah, the state administrative building Menara Kinabalu, and Wisma SESB in Kota Kinabalu rushed outside due to the tremors. Kota Kinabalu is about 966km west of Mindanao. According to a worker, the tremors were felt on the third floor of the office where she was working.

According to RTM Sarawak, the tremors were also felt in Limbang Plaza, Sarawak. Workers there, mostly public servants, had to evacuate the building.

The Meteorological Department noted that tremors were felt in Kota Kinabalu, Kota Belud, and Putatan in Sabah, as well as areas in the northern parts of Sarawak. No tsunami warning has been issued. – July 11, 2024.
