EastEnders fans were left in tears watching Phil Mitchell said goodbye to his beloved best friend Nigel Bates, as the beloved character breathed his last breath.
Nigel, one of EastEnders oldest characters, first appeared in the soap in 1992. Played by Paul Bradley, the character was established as a friend of the Mitchell brothers: Grant (the recently returned Ross Kemp) and Phil (Steve McFadden).
While Bradley’s original run on the BBC soap ended in 1998, he returned as Nigel in 2024. Since his comeback, the character has been plagued by a series of health problems; he was diagnosed with dementia and, in scenes airing earlier this month, hospitalised with pneumonia for a second time.
In Wednesday (29 April) night’s episode of the soap, which is released on BBC iPlayer the morning before it airs, Nigel dies.
His family and friends visit him in his care home to say goodbye, with the Mitchell brothers the last to stop by. While Phil is nervous to visit and unsure what to say, Nigel’s wife Julie (Karen Henthorn) reminds him that while his friend cannot speak, Nigel loves him and “needs to know that you’re going to be OK”.
Eventually mustering the courage, Phil leans forward to tell his friend: “Nige, you know I was never any good at saying how I feel… Suppose it all builds up inside and I don’t know how I feel and I can’t let it out.

“You showed me how to be a different kind of man. You showed me how to be strong without using my fists. You showed me to how to laugh when there weren’t much to laugh about. You’re the best mate I’ve ever had, Nige.”
Tearing up, Phil tells him: “I love you. I’m going to be OK. We’re all going to be OK. It’s OK for you to go, Nige. You can go.”
Nigel then dies, with Phil letting go of his friend’s hand and hugging his mate’s sobbing widow.
Reacting to the “heartbreaking” scene on X (formerly Twitter), viewers shared their devastation at the “beautifully portrayed” scene.

“Tonight’s #EastEnders has to be one of the best episodes, ever. Terribly sad yet so beautifully done,” wrote one viewer. “Paul Bradley deserves all the awards for his portrayal as Nigel Bates. Steve McFadden, Ross Kemp and Karen Henthorn were also incredible. End of an era.”
“What an emotional episode, never cried so much in my life,” another tweet read, while a different fan called the episode ”a fitting goodbye for an Albert Square legend”.
Another post read: “So many thoughts after today’s EastEnders. We have been so lucky to have had the marvellous Paul Bradley back for so long, and I’ll miss him and Nigel very much. Some really terrific performances from everyone involved today. A fitting end to what has been a wonderful story.”
