EASTERN Communications has tied up with First Gen Corp. to increase its renewable energy usage to 10 percent from 2 percent, specifically for the telco’s Makati headquarters and key technical operations centers (TOCs).
“This partnership represents a clear step forward in how we power our operations,” Eastern Communications co-coordinator Aileen Regio said.
“By integrating geothermal energy into key facilities, we are reinforcing the resilience of our core infrastructure. Sustainability, for us, is directly linked to service continuity and long-term performance,” she added.
The geothermal energy will be sourced from First Gen’s power plant in Leyte.
For Eastern, the partnership ensures that critical network facilities are backed by stable, dependable power while lowering carbon emissions.
The transition was enabled by the government’s Retail Competition Open Access program, which allows large electricity consumers to directly contract with power suppliers.
“Increasing our renewable utilization is a concrete milestone," said Jaeson Evangelista, another Eastern co-coordinator.
Together with the 222-kW (kilowatt) solar capacity already supporting our Makati HQ and TOCs, our adoption of renewable geothermal energy strengthens our ability to operate efficiently while aligning with national climate priorities and broader shift toward a circular economy,” he added.
