EC confirms no by-election in Pandan, Setiawangsa

THE Election Commission (EC) received notification from the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul, via a letter dated May 20, regarding the Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats after they were declared vacant under Article 51 of the Federal Constitution.

Its chairman, Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun, said that, based on Article 54 (1) of the Federal Constitution, the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat had informed them that there was no need to fill the contingent vacancies.

"In line with that, no by-election for the P.100 Pandan and P.118 Setiawangsa Parliamentary Constituency will be held," he said briefly in a statement.

Previously, Johari confirmed that he had received notices from Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad regarding their resignations as Pandan MP and Setiawangsa MP, effective Monday.

Last Sunday, Rafizi and Nik Nazmi announced their resignation from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), vacating their respective parliamentary seats.

The two former ministers announced a political direction announcement ceremony held in Petaling Jaya.

Rafizi stated that the letters requesting the vacating of the Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats were submitted to Johari on Monday, in addition to the official notification of his departure from the party, which was sent to PKR Secretary-General Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh on Tuesday.

The two leaders also confirmed taking over Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama), a small political party registered on December 2, 2016, in Georgetown, Penang, by its founder, Tan Gin Theam. – May 21, 2026
