KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission (EC) has denied a viral poster on social media claiming to show key dates for the upcoming 17th State Election.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said, in a statement on Wednesday, that no official announcement has been made regarding the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly or the setting of election dates.

He stressed that information such as the writ of election, nomination day and polling day would only be released through the EC’s official channels.

Khairul described the circulation of false information as irresponsible and warned it could cause unnecessary confusion among the public.

He reminded that individuals found spreading or publishing fake information could face legal action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and other relevant laws.

The EC also urged the public to remain cautious and not be misled by unverified postings shared online.

Khairul advised that accurate and reliable updates would always be made available through the EC website, media statements and press conferences.
