ECoS fines for electricity offences reach RM2.23m

Kota Kinabalu: Court fines for electricity supply offences in Sabah have reached RM2.23 million since the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) took over regulatory powers in 2024, with 81 convictions recorded up to October 2026.

ECoS chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said 50 convictions were recorded this year up to Oct 16, resulting in RM1.6 million in fines, involving 28 illegal electricity connections, 19 meter tampering cases, two electric shock incidents and one case of supplying electricity without a licence.

He said 41 cases were still undergoing prosecution, while another 33 were being processed for compound action, adding that Sabah Electricity’s estimated losses from convicted electricity theft and meter tampering cases amounted to RM9.49 million.

The highest fine was RM635,000 imposed on Asis bin Cengkuru at the Sandakan Court on July 9 for an illegal electricity connection; he was jailed for eight months for failing to pay and handed over to the Immigration Department for deportation action.

In a recent case, mini-market operator Mohd Arif Koh Kean Lin was fined RM30,000 by the Keningau Sessions Court on Oct 13 after pleading guilty to two charges involving illegal electricity connections at his premises in Kampung Taurid Taud, prompting ECoS to remind property owners and operators to ensure their electrical installations comply with the law.
