Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) is stepping up enforcement to ensure electrical equipment and gas appliances sold in Sabah meet safety and legal requirements.
In an operation on Sept 17, ECoS inspected four premises in Kota Kinabalu suspected of selling electrical and gas products without approved safety labels or markings.
The operation involved 22 ECoS officers and four SIRIM officers, with light bulbs, electrical cables, electric kettles, irons and gas stoves seized after being found without the required safety markings.
Under Regulation 107 of the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024, regulated electrical equipment must be approved and carry ECoS-prescribed safety labels or markings before sale, with offences punishable by a fine of up to RM20,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
For gas appliances, Regulation 117 of the Gas Supply Regulations 2023 requires approved appliances to carry prescribed markings or labels, with offences under subsection 62(2) of the Gas Supply Enactment 2023 punishable by a fine of up to RM500,000, including additional fines for continuing offences after conviction.
