
KIULU: Community-based eco-tourism at Pulau Kelapa, coupled with the weekly night market at Malangang Lama launched Monday is an excellent opportunity for local residents to increase their income.
Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said residents in and around greater Mukim Kiulu are also welcomed to do business there.
“Actually, this Sunday market has been in existence even before today’s launch and apart from offering an opportunity for locals to do business it adds to the exposure of eco-tourism that Pulau Kelapa has to offer,” said Joniston who is Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment.
He added that the community-based tourism product together with the weekly tamu is good for the residents in terms of cooperation and increasing their income through business.
Present were Kiulu Assistant District Officer Justin Ginduk and Kiulu PPM (Community Development Leader) Golubi Guntarek.
Joniston who is also Sabah Tourism Board chairman announced that the State Government has allocated RM150,000 for the construction of an open air hall at the village.
“This hall will be for multi-purpose including to enable local residents to do small business like hawking,” he said.
He congratulated the villagers for their enterprising spirit in setting up the community-based eco-tourism and weekly tamu.
In conjunction with the launch, various activities were held including sports, traditional food cooking contest and handing over of canopy and solar lights.
