The land acquisition process for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project in Selangor is advancing smoothly, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The acquisition efforts are currently concentrated on the final section of the rail line near the Klang district, an area characterized by a dense population.

Minister Loke expressed confidence that the land acquisition would be completed on schedule, citing effective cooperation from the state government and the contractor's extensive experience in managing similar issues in the East Coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang. "It is normal for landowners to be initially dissatisfied; they may need clarification or perhaps want an increase in compensation and so on. That’s a common thing," Loke explained. He assured that any arising issues would be resolved with fair compensation.

Speaking to Bernama after recording a special program for Bernama TV in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, Loke highlighted the crucial role of state governments in facilitating the land acquisition process. He noted that the state governments involved have demonstrated strong cooperation with the ECRL project contractor, China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCC-ECRL). "State governments play the biggest role in resolving land acquisition issues because they also know that this project will benefit their states," he said.

Construction of the 665-kilometre ECRL line is progressing as planned, with the East Coast alignment now entering the station construction phase. One of the most challenging segments of the project, the Genting Tunnel, spans 16.39 kilometres across the Titiwangsa Range and has reached 30 percent completion. This critical section is expected to take over a year to finalize.

The ECRL project aims to significantly enhance connectivity between the East Coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang and the West Coast regions, including Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, and the Federal Territory of Putrajaya. Currently, these areas have limited rail connectivity. The improved infrastructure is anticipated to facilitate economic growth and regional development by providing efficient transportation links.

According to the Transport Ministry, the ECRL is scheduled for completion in December 2026, with operations set to commence in January 2027. The project's successful execution is expected to transform the transportation landscape of Peninsular Malaysia, fostering greater integration between the East and West Coasts and enhancing the overall mobility of people and goods.

In summary, the ECRL project is moving forward effectively, with strong governmental and contractor collaboration ensuring that land acquisition challenges are addressed promptly. As construction progresses, the project remains on track to meet its ambitious timeline, promising significant benefits for Malaysia's transportation network upon completion.
