PUBLIC Works Secretary Vince Dizon said rehabilitation for Phase 1 of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue, or EDSA, is 40-percent complete.

This initial phase covers the stretch from Roxas Boulevard to Orense Street in Guadalupe.

“The DPWH is also continuously coordinating with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and Department of Transportation to ensure that works are carried out smoothly with minimal inconvenience to motorists and commuters, particularly during rush hours,” Dizon said Thursday after inspecting the EDSA Busway at the Taft Avenue Station.

The long-delayed rehabilitation began on Christmas Eve to take advantage of the holiday break when fewer vehicles were on the highway.

Under the revised work plan, Dizon said the project will be implemented in two-month phases. The second phase will cover the remainder of the highway.

Stretching 23.8 kilometers, EDSA is the longest and most congested highway in Metro Manila. It passes through six cities: Caloocan, Quezon, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati and Pasay.

Dizon said faster implementation would reduce costs from the original estimate of P17 billion to P6 billion — a savings of P11 billion.

The project includes expanding pedestrian lanes, constructing shared bike lanes and repair stops, building pedestrian waiting sheds, and removing obstructions along commuter routes.
