In a significant display of support, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has been lauded by her deputy for her unwavering defense of Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools in Malaysia.
Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh, speaking at the 2024 Tiger Sin Chew Chinese education charity concert, highlighted Fadhlina’s proactive stance in safeguarding these institutions, a move that has resonated deeply within the multicultural fabric of Malaysian society.
Under Fadhlina’s leadership, the Ministry of Education has consistently addressed the unique needs of vernacular schools. Wong emphasized that Fadhlina is unafraid to vocalize her support for these schools, both within the parliament and in public forums. “She is unafraid to assert that the unity government will consistently protect and defend the status of vernacular schools in Malaysia. There is her firm stand,” Wong stated, underscoring the minister's unwavering commitment to maintaining the diverse educational landscape of the country.
Further exemplifying this commitment, Wong announced the imminent opening of two new vernacular schools. SJKC Poay Chai in Johor is scheduled to commence operations next month, while SJKC Poi Min in Selangor will start its first semester in September 2024. These new institutions are expected to enhance access to vernacular education and cater to the growing demand within their respective communities.
Wong also highlighted the broader initiatives undertaken by the government to improve the national education system. This year has already seen the establishment of five new schools, including SK Saujana Putra and SMK Bandar Saujana Utama 2 in Selangor, SMK Serada in Terengganu, SM Sains Segamat in Johor, and SJKT Heawood in Perak. These efforts demonstrate Putrajaya's dedication to elevating educational standards across the nation, ensuring that all segments of society benefit from improved infrastructure and resources.
Fadhlina’s stance on vernacular schools was further solidified in March when she affirmed that the government had no plans to overhaul these institutions. Upholding the Education Act 1996, the ministry continues to recognize Chinese and Tamil as mediums of instruction, thereby preserving the cultural and linguistic heritage of these communities.
At the same event, Roland Bala, Managing Director of Heineken Malaysia Bhd, praised the Chinese community's strong emphasis on education. “I’m not surprised at all that the Chinese community is so successful in every way,” he remarked, attributing their achievements to their steadfast commitment to educational excellence.
The 2024 Tiger Sin Chew Chinese education charity concert is part of a larger campaign aiming to raise RM15 million for 11 SJKCs this year. Since its inception in 1994, the campaign has garnered over RM407 million, benefiting more than 540 schools. This initiative not only underscores the community's dedication to education but also highlights the collective effort to ensure that vernacular schools continue to thrive.
The praise for Fadhlina Sidek from her deputy reflects a broader governmental endorsement of vernacular schools, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a diverse and inclusive educational system in Malaysia. This commitment not only supports the academic needs of Chinese and Tamil students but also preserves the cultural richness that defines the nation.
