KUALA LUMPUR – The Education Ministry is preparing to announce a set of enhanced measures aimed at improving safety and discipline in schools, following directives issued by the Cabinet.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said recent events have exposed serious vulnerabilities in the system, prompting her ministry to accelerate efforts to safeguard students, educators and the wider school community.
“It feels like there’s no such thing as a holiday right now, because we are actively working to organise all mechanisms to reinforce a safe school ecosystem,” she wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.
“I have held meetings and briefings with the psychosocial support team, which is currently carrying out crisis interventions to assist affected school communities following several incidents, in support of mental health care.”
Her remarks follow a series of violent and tragic incidents that have shaken public confidence in the education system. On October 14, a 16-year-old girl was fatally stabbed by a 14-year-old boy at a secondary school in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. The suspect has since been detained to assist police investigations.
Earlier, on October 2, a Form Three student in Alor Gajah, Melaka, was raped by a senior student within school grounds. Less than a week before that, on September 27, a male pupil died after falling into a sewage drain at school when a fibre-type manhole cover collapsed beneath him.
These cases form part of a wider crisis that has gripped Malaysian schools in recent months. In Kedah and Melaka, gang rape allegations involving teenage boys have led to arrests, with disturbing footage reportedly shared online.
The death of Zara Qairina, who fell from a dormitory window under suspicious circumstances, and a bullying-related fatality in Sabah involving a 13-year-old student have further intensified scrutiny of school safety protocols.
The Malaysian Paediatric Association has since declared school violence a national public health emergency, urging comprehensive reform.
In response to mounting public pressure, several students implicated in serious offences have been expelled.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also weighed in, attributing part of the problem to the unchecked influence of social media on youth behaviour. — October 20, 2025
