As a management educator and human resource development (HRD) practitioner as well as a graduate and alumni of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), I believe that anchored teaching must link to the learning strategy where the pedagogy relies on a powerful real-life case study method rather than abstract concepts and scenarios. Let me make a strong case that it bridges theory and practice. It can transform passive learners into active participants.

I can still remember my favorite organizational behavior guru, Professor Dr. Junbo Borromeo said, “A common teaching method at AIM case-rooms and online platforms is an approach in which the educator uses engaging case study and real-world situations to impart knowledge. It takes away from the age-old principle of just memorizing facts. Instead, it takes learners toward meaningful contexts to explore a subject matter & build their understanding.” (junbo.borromeo@gmail.com/junbo@AIM.EDU)

Based on my corporate training experience with Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Academy & Sejahtera Leadership Initiative (SLI), I anchored a teaching method to an engaging case study or real-working practices. Students can then actively explore the information and apply their knowledge to real problems rather than just absorbing it passively. The outcome takes students through realistic challenges, it also helps them develop a problem-solving skills in learners.

It was indeed an opportunity to revisit International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) when witnessing a new postgraduate student from the Philippines, Ahmad-Makkih Tarason, for enrollment process in the Master of Science in Islamic Banking and Finance program. Ahmad's dad is my good friend, Ustaz Dr. Aboulkhair Sanu-uk Tarason, Chairman of Basilan Ulama Supreme Council and one of the Advisor to Governor of Basilan Mujiv S. Hataman, and Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman of Isabela de Basilan City. (basilan.gov.ph; isabelacity.gov.ph)

I understand Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) form the backbone Basilan province and part of the Philippines supply chains. Through Governor Mujiv & Mayor Sitti's SME engagements, banks are helping to bridge the gap with increasing sustainability expectations, access to green solutions and Islamic financing system. Much progress has already been made in recent years to balance biodiversity conservation & revenue, but a lot more needs to be done.
