Six Malaysian men and two Indonesian women face serious charges for allegedly trafficking heroin in the capital

KUALA LUMPUR: Six Malaysian men and two Indonesian women were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with trafficking 0.36 kilogrammes (kg) of drugs into the country last week.

M.Puvanesvaaran, 29, R. Kalaiarasu, 30, M. Mughilan, 26, K S. Surrendran, 24, S. Satiish Kumar, 30, Loke Jun Mun, 34, and the two women, Ananda, 30, and Devi Ekaputri Karokaro, 38, nodded after the charges were read out to them before Magistrate Illi Marisqa Khalizan.

However, no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The eight friends were charged with jointly trafficking drugs, suspected to be heroin weighing about 357.80 grammes (0.36 kg) at a condominium in Jalan Chan Sow Lin here, at 8.30 am on March 15 this year.

They are charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,  which is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same law, and read with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

They face the death penalty or life imprisonment and a maximum of 15 strokes of the cane if not given the death penalty, if convicted.

The court did not allow them bail and set June 16 for mention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Syafika Azwa Fikri appeared for the prosecution while lawyer Yeong Jei Beng represented the six Malaysian men.

The two Indonesian women were unrepresented.
