KUALA UMPUR: The police have arrested eight individuals, 18 to 56, for joining a gathering regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) rights at the grounds of the Sogo complex last Saturday.
Kuala Lumpur police chief said that all suspects were members of a ‘religion’ known as ‘Ahmadi‘, having joined the group almost two years, adding that one of them had committed a prior offence last month when they distributed ‘The Ahmadi’ brochures at Putrajaya Mosque.
He said that it was up to the Kuala Lumpur Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) to determine if ‘The Ahmadi’ was a cult and that Jawi had opened an investigation paper to look into the matter in further detail.
The suspects were being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, he added.
