Eight men plead not guilty to injuring three policemen

Eight men charged with assaulting three police officers in Penang plead not guilty, granted bail of RM5,000 each as case proceeds to document submission.

GEORGE TOWN: Eight men have pleaded not guilty to a charge of intentionally causing injury to three policemen.

The accused, aged between 26 and 38, entered their plea before Magistrate Tunku Intan Nadiah Tunku Mohammed Nazarin at the Magistrate’s Court here.

They are jointly charged under Section 332 of the Penal Code, read with Section 149.

The charge relates to an alleged assault on Lance Corporal S.Uvaneand, 26, Constable Muhammad Danial Danish Azlan, 23, and Lance Corporal Muhammad Amzaruddin Fakhri Khuiruddin, 30.

The incident allegedly occurred at 9.50 pm on March 25 in front of a PPR flats on Jalan Sungai in Sungai Pinang.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Marlissa Safina Saiful Adli proposed bail of RM10,000 for each accused.

Defence lawyer S.Meharaj, representing all eight men, applied for minimum bail citing his clients’ low incomes.

He stated the accused work as cooks, clerks, mechanics, and food delivery people.

The court allowed each accused to be bailed at RM5,000 with one surety.

The case has been set for the submission of documents on May 19.

Police had previously remanded the eight local men to assist in investigations.

The incident began when a police team on enforcement duty at an apartment requested backup.

Upon arrival, officers were chasing a suspicious individual who fled towards a housing estate.

A disagreement with several members of the public then occurred.

Three of the four police officers involved suffered minor injuries during a subsequent scuffle.
