Few Malaysian cartoonists command the kind of enduring affection that Dato' Mohammad Nor bin Mohammad Khalid - better known as Lat - continues to inspire. His playful lines and sharp observations have long captured the everyday rhythms of Malaysian life. Today, those stories are housed not just in books or old newspaper clippings, but in a dedicated cultural space: Galeri Rumah Lat - comprises two main structures displaying Lat's classic artworks & memorabilia, and a reconstructed Perak-style house that mirrors his childhood home. Together, they provide a unique journey that shaped his worldview.

I know Lat in 1972 when were together in the same batch as Cadet Journalists with the Editorial Desk of the New Straits Times in Kuala Lumpur. He was attached with the crime reporting section whereas I served at the current affairs reporting section. I knew then Lat's first comic was published at the age of 13 to becoming an internationally recognized Malaysian artist, reflects themes of humility, community & kampung spirit. His illustrations have appeared on everyday products and globally platforms, but Batu Gajah remains central to his story. The gallery serves to recognize the lives & memories of people.

Whilst travelling the countryside, my wife, Zarina accompanied our four grandchildren: Iffah, Ilfi, Fayyadh, and Ilyan and their parents: Jann & Faiz to visit Galeri Rumah Lat. It offers them connections to history, humor, childhood innocence, and national identity. It poised to remain a meaningful cultural trail.

Lat's gallery has become a major anchor for Perak's cultural tourism. It attracts domestic (especially students & senior citizens) and international visitors, stimulating the local economy through increased foot traffic to Batu Gajah, and its neighborhood. By immortalizing artistic talents of legendary cartoonist Lat, it is driving several key long-term impacts on the local community and heritage preservation, celebrating a local icon who captured the nation's heart.
