Marked by it's vastness, the Amazon rainforest is famous for being the world's largest tropical rainforest & river system, spanning more than 1.6 billion acres across nine countries. It's also often called the “lungs of the Earth”, said to contribute to the production of 20% of the world's oxygen supply, although this has been theoretically rebuked by National Geographic.

Beyond size, what lies deep in the Amazon rainforest is most fascinating - it is known to be home to 427 mammal species, 1,300 bird species, 378 species of reptiles, and more than 400 species of amphibians, with new species still being discovered every year. Due to it's large contribution to the diversity of multiple unique species, conservation is a key topic when it comes to the Amazon, not just to protect the wildlife within but also the heritage it holds.

But what many Malaysians aren't aware of, is that Taman Negara, located in our very own homeland, is a rainforest that is actually much older than the Amazon. Covering 4,300sqkm across Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu, it has quietly existed for over 130 million years, making it one of the oldest rainforests on the planet.

The Amazon rainforest is estimated to be about 55 million years old - while some parts of South America are ancient, the Amazon as we know it today developed much later, after major geological changes that helped reshape the continent. This means that Taman Negara is older than the Amazon by about 75 million years, more than double the age of the already-ancient Amazon.

Many reasons contribute to how Taman Negara has thrived for so long and in utter peace - the answer lies largely in it's strategic location and stability. Malaysia sits near the equator, hence it avoided the historical extreme ice ages that wiped out forests across Europe and North America. As glaciers covered the rest of the world, Southeast Asia stayed warm and wet enough for rainforests to survive and thrive. Instead of being destroyed and having it's ecosystem be reset consistently, Malaysia’s rainforest simply kept evolving, continuously for millions of years.

The diversity of flora & fauna in Taman Negara continued to grow with it along the millions of years - housing over 300 species of birds, 45 species of fruit trees and home to the rare Rafflesia plant, the Sumatran rhinoceros, Asian elephant, Malay tiger, Malayan tapir, clouded monitor lizard and more.

Taman Negara is often described as a “living museum.” Some of the plants found there are similar to species that existed back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Because the forest has never fully disappeared or reset, plants and animals had time to slowly adapt and specialize. This contributes to the unique and rich biodiversity that Taman Negara holds as one of the oldest rainforests in the world.

While the Amazon is vast and powerful, Malaysia’s rainforest is ancient beyond imagination. Recognizing this not only reshapes how we think about natural history, but also highlights why protecting these forests is so important — once lost, something 130 million years in the making can never truly be replaced.
