Here’s something every Malaysian needs to know especially if you’ve ever thought it’s okay to let a family member or friend use your MyKad to buy subsidised petrol. It’s illegal, and the penalties are serious!

The National Registration Department (NRD) recently reminded everyone that your MyKad is your personal ID and cannot be used, held, or represented by anyone else, even if it’s a sibling, parent, or cousin. Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias, NRD Director-General, said it clearly: “All transactions, including fuel purchases, must be carried out personally by the MyKad holder.

Why is this such a big deal? Well, under Regulation 25 of the National Registration Regulations 1990, using or possessing someone else’s MyKad without authorization is an offence. Those caught could face fines up to RM20,000, jail time, or even both!

This reminder came after a recent case in Kelantan, where a man was arrested for allegedly using four different MyKads to buy over 100 litres of RON95 petrol. Imagine thinking you’re just “helping a family member,” only to risk serious legal trouble.

Why You Should Care

It’s not just about breaking the law, misusing MyKads messes with government subsidy programs like RON95 fuel quotas. These programs exist to help Malaysians fairly, and when someone uses another person’s card, it unfairly reduces fuel quota for others.

Plus, your MyKad is linked to more than just fuel. It’s your gateway to government services, health care, and even other subsidies. So lending it out might create problems beyond the petrol pump.

Quick Tips to Stay Safe

  1. Keep your MyKad secure – Don’t let anyone borrow it, even family.
  2. Use your own card for fuel – Always ensure you’re the one doing the transaction.
  3. Be aware of the law – Ignorance is no excuse, and penalties are serious.

So next time someone asks to borrow your MyKad, think twice! Protect your card, your rights, and avoid unnecessary trouble.

By using your MyKad responsibly and following the law, you help protect the integrity of Malaysia’s subsidy programs while safeguarding yourself from unnecessary legal trouble. Remember, when it comes to MyKad, personal responsibility is the best policy.
