Why Many Malaysians Feel “Poor” Even When They’re M40 or T20

When Malaysians hear terms like B40, M40 and T20, many immediately think about income levels and government subsidies. But in today’s Malaysia, these labels no longer tell the full story.

A household earning RM6,000 monthly may technically fall under the M40 category, yet still struggle every month after paying rent, car instalments, groceries, childcare and medical expenses. Even some T20 families quietly admit that life in major cities is becoming increasingly expensive.

That is the hidden reality behind Malaysia’s income classification system today.

In Malaysia, B40 refers to the bottom 40% income group, M40 represents the middle 40%, and T20 refers to the top 20% of earners. These categories are based on total household income, not individual salary.

But here comes the real “Ei Tahutak?” moment — many Malaysians are earning more than before, yet life somehow feels harder.

The biggest reason is the rising cost of living. Property prices have increased much faster than salary growth over the years. In urban areas like Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Johor Bahru, rental alone can already consume a large portion of monthly income. Young adults who once dreamed of owning homes are now delaying purchases or continuing to live with their parents because home ownership feels increasingly out of reach.

Transportation has also become a financial burden. In Malaysia, owning a car is often a necessity rather than a luxury due to limited public transport coverage outside major cities. Monthly instalments, tolls, petrol, insurance and maintenance costs can easily consume a significant portion of household income. For many families, having two working adults also means maintaining two vehicles.

Healthcare is another growing concern. Government hospitals remain affordable, but waiting times can sometimes be long. Meanwhile, private medical treatment has become increasingly expensive. One serious illness can disrupt years of savings almost overnight. Because of this, many Malaysians continue working under pressure simply because they fear losing stable income and medical coverage.

Education costs are also steadily rising. Parents today invest heavily in tuition classes, digital devices, internet access and enrichment programmes because they want their children to compete in an increasingly demanding environment. Some families sacrifice holidays, hobbies and personal comfort just to prioritise their children’s future.

Marriage and family life are quietly being affected as well.

Many couples now delay marriage, postpone having children, or choose to remain child-free due to financial concerns. Financial stress has also become one of the biggest silent pressures in relationships. Couples spend more time working, commuting and worrying about expenses, leaving less time for rest, emotional connection and family bonding.

Another hidden truth is that income categories can sometimes feel misleading. An M40 family in a smaller town may live relatively comfortably, while an M40 household in Klang Valley may feel financially stretched every single month. Even some T20 earners admit they do not feel “rich” after accounting for loans, childcare, ageing parents and rising daily expenses.

This is why more Malaysians are beginning to question whether the B40, M40 and T20 classifications still accurately reflect real living conditions today.

At the end of the day, behind every income category is a real human story.

A father working overtime just to pay school fees.

A mother quietly cutting personal expenses to manage grocery costs.

A young graduate wondering if home ownership will ever become possible.

A couple trying to balance dreams, responsibilities and rising living expenses.

So perhaps the real question today is no longer whether someone belongs to B40, M40 or T20.

The real question is:

Are Malaysians truly living comfortably anymore — or are most people simply trying their best to survive quietly?
