EJEN Ali The Movie 2, which opened in cinemas nationwide today, has already received glowing praise from early viewers, with many lauding its emotionally charged plot, thrilling action sequences, local flavour, and a heartfelt exploration of friendship.
Described by fans as far more than a typical animated action-comedy, the film masterfully weaves humour, drama, and personal conflict into a layered narrative. Five Years in the Making
The film’s journey to the big screen was not a smooth one. Originally planned to follow closely after the success of the first film, production was severely delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the extended closure of cinemas. Instead, the creative team shifted focus to develop Ejen Ali Season 3 for television, keeping fans engaged with fresh content.
This pivot meant significant script restructuring, said director and lead writer Usamah Zaid Yasin, to ensure the second film was not only a continuation but a fresh, coherent extension of the Ejen Ali universe.
“It took over five years to properly craft the twists and turns that link back to the first film and the TV series. It was a challenge, but one that helped deepen the narrative,” said Usamah.
Writing from Scratch, with Heart
Usamah, who has been involved with Ejen Ali since its inception, admitted that developing a script from a blank slate was a demanding process.
“This experience opened my eyes to the true depth of writing. It’s not just about editing existing ideas, but about building layered narratives, developing believable character arcs, and creating emotional beats that genuinely move viewers. That’s when I truly appreciated writing as the backbone of storytelling,” he said.
Driven by Passion, Not Just Numbers
Despite economic setbacks and having to downsize from nearly 100 to just 60 core team members, the production remained steadfast in its goal of pushing the boundaries of local animation. WAU Animation partnered with independent creatives and international studios, including in Indonesia, to maintain the film’s ambitious visual standard.
The result is a vibrant, high-octane cinematic experience filled with fluid animation, expressive design, and carefully choreographed action – a significant leap from the original film.
Defying Convention
WAU Animation’s choice to craft a narrative-driven animated film was seen as unconventional. “We were told that kids only want simple stories,” shared Usamah. “But we didn’t agree. We looked to global benchmarks like Dragon Ball and Avatar: The Last Airbender – stories that grow with their audience and offer depth.”
That boldness culminates in Ejen Ali The Movie 2, a production that proves Malaysian animation can tell stories on par with global standards while staying rooted in local identity.
This sequel showcases what can be achieved when passion, vision, and cultural pride come together – a cinematic triumph that bridges generations and raises the bar for regional animation.
