(UPDATE) EL Nido is among the BBC’s list of world’s eight best beach escapes, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said Wednesday.

The recognition comes at a time when rising fuel prices and global economic challenges continue to shape travel patterns worldwide.

The DOT said the citation underscores El Nido’s sustained reputation as a premier destination offering exceptional natural scenery and meaningful travel experiences.

The destination continues to draw visitors with its pristine beaches, clear blue waters and dramatic limestone formations that cater to both leisure and adventure seekers.

DOT officer in charge Secretary Verna Buensuceso said the recognition reflects the Philippines’ strong standing in the global tourism market.

“Citations such as these affirm the beauty and prestige of the many treasures that we boast to the world,” Buensuceso said.

“This recognition proves that El Nido, like our other coastal destinations, can offer the same level of quality vacations as our global counterparts,” she added.

BBC journalist Francis Augustin highlighted El Nido’s wide range of marine activities, including visits to hidden beaches and lagoons across Bacuit Bay.

The DOT added that efforts are under way to strengthen El Nido’s position as a cruise tourism destination following recent port calls by international vessels.

El Nido now stands alongside beach destinations in New York, Italy, Puerto Rico, India, St. Maarten, Scotland and Tasmania in the BBC’s curated list.
